Prepare Your Vehicle for Winter:  Is Your Antifreeze Winter Ready?

As winter approaches and temperatures begin to drop, it’s crucial to ensure that your vehicle is ready to handle freezing temperatures. One of the key components to check is your vehicle’s antifreeze. Antifreeze plays a critical role in your engine’s performance, both in cold and hot temperatures. It prevents the fluids in your engine from freezing during frigid winter conditions, while also safeguarding against engine overheating.

At Precise Car Service, we strongly recommend that our clients have their antifreeze tested annually. If you haven’t had your antifreeze checked in the last year, now is the perfect time to come in and have it tested to ensure it is “winter ready” and capable of withstanding the extreme cold temperatures that can plummet to -40°C.

Years of research have led to the development of antifreeze/coolant that resists low temperatures while providing protection against corrosion and wear inside your vehicle’s cooling system. However, antifreeze is not a “set it and forget it” component. It requires periodic inspection and replacement, as the daily wear and tear of driving can degrade the additives that keep your engine running smoothly. This is especially crucial during the winter months when your engine is most vulnerable to the cold.

Antifreeze, also known as coolant, is mixed with an equal amount of water in the engine to create radiator fluid. If the ratio is off, even slightly, your vehicle can be at risk of serious problems this fall and winter. Insufficient antifreeze levels can result in the fluids in your engine freezing as temperatures drop, while too much water can cause the radiator fluid to boil inside the engine.

When the fluid level becomes too low, it can no longer effectively remove heat from the engine, leading to overheating and potentially causing extensive damage and expensive repairs. Don’t wait until you have a frozen engine block or an overheating vehicle. Visit our shop and have your cooling system tested and inspected before winter’s chilly temperatures set in and jeopardize your engine’s performance.

At Precise Car Service, our experienced team, led by Joe and Gary, will ensure that the antifreeze-to-water ratio is correct for your specific vehicle. We will also conduct tests to ensure that your antifreeze is in good condition and capable of withstanding both winter’s extreme cold and summer’s scorching heat. Additionally, we’ll inspect the cooling system for any signs of leaks, addressing them promptly to prevent further issues.

Remember, as antifreeze ages, it can become corrosive to your engine, potentially causing damage. That’s why it’s important to have your cooling system flushed and filled with new antifreeze to maintain optimal engine performance. If it has been over a year or year and a half since your last inspection, now is the ideal time to take care of this vital maintenance task. With the frigid temperatures of Southern Ontario on the horizon, don’t risk damaging your engine. Schedule a winter-ready inspection at Precise Car Service today. Book now to secure your appointment and enjoy worry-free winter driving.
